Gillis to appeal for new city administrator

Attorney Norman Gillis Jr. told members of the McComb Exchange Club on Thursday that he will go before the city board next week to appeal for the hire of a new city administrator.

Gillis was on the agenda for the board’s meeting this week, but was unable to attend. The board will hold a work session Jan. 15.

Mississippi Tribune hits newstands today with pilot edition

The first issue of the Mississippi Tribune will publish today with an eye toward covering overlooked stories that “may be of more interest to the African-American community,” editorial manager Lonnie Ross said.

The paper will be a 24-page weekly publication starting in February, Ross said.

Ex-chief files complaint: Felder says city discriminated

An Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint against the city of McComb has been filed by former fire chief Vernell Felder, and the city is considering a countersuit for breach of contract, Mayor Zach Patterson said.

- A rig probes an oil well this week where a blowout occurred last month off Highway 570 near Spring Hill Road in Amite County. Denbury Resources installed the rig to gather data on what caused the eruption of crude oil, mud and salt water that resulted in the evacuation of four homes. Next week, officials with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will visit the site to see what Denbury has learned. (Aaron Rhoads
