Boards of supervisors in Pike and Walthall counties declared local emergencies Friday in response to the widespread outbreak of COVID-19.

The decision came as the number of confirmed cases of a novel coronavirus in Mississippi spiked to 80, up from 50 Thursday evening.

COVID-19 has reached Southwest Mississippi.

Mississippi State University officials said Thursday that an unidentified male employee of the Pike County Extension Service office in Magnolia tested positive for the coronavirus after leaving the office while feeling ill on Wednesday.
