Magnolia kills meter deal

Magnolia aldermen have killed a deal that would have replaced 915 water meters in the city with automated upgrades after learning that most of the water meters aren’t that bad after all.

The move also eliminates the need for an $800,000 bond issue to pay for the equipment.

Summit man jailed in car thefts

A Summit man allegedly took a friend’s car on a joyride, dropped it off at an abandoned house and stole another car Thursday morning.

Pike County Chief Investigator Chris Bell said Donald Sparkman, 39, 1406 Meadville St., has been charged with burglary and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Mississippi freeze

Southwest Mississippians awoke Saturday to frigid weather and hard shells of ice on cars, houses and yards. Trees bent under the weight of icy shrouds.

If people were lucky, they also awoke to a home with electricity and intact plumbing. Temperatures fell by morning to the low 20s.
