A storm system early Thursday caused extensive damage in Brookhaven and in Wilkinson County.

Officials blamed the storm damage in Brookhaven on powerful straight line winds, but a tornado hasn’t been ruled out as the cause of damage in Wilkinson County.

First charter school slated in Pike

A Magnolia couple are in the early stages of opening the first charter school in Pike County.

Byron and Demetris Garner, owners of Kingdom Charter School, 1086 Airport-Fernwood Road, Magnolia, passed their first hurdle when they sent a letter of intent to the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board.

Father charged in son’s shooting death

Police have arrested a McComb man accused of fatally shooting his son and wounding a woman during a dispute Monday night.

Detective Sid Boyte said officers arrested John Edward Young III, 46, 330 S. Fourth St., at his home at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday.
