Bloomberg’s futile courtship

Mississippi normally doesn’t get much attention during presidential elections because the state’s electoral votes are virtually guaranteed to go to the Republican nominee. The last Democrat to carry the Magnolia State was Jimmy Carter in 1976, and since then the state has only continued to shift further to the right.

Reverse the news decline

In the year 2000 this nation had 78,000 news reporters, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As we head into 2020, that number has fallen by more than 36%.

That’s nearly 30,000 less people gathering the information that is vital for a democracy to make informed decisions.

The South’s population grew faster than any other region from 2018 to 2019, recent census estimates show, driven by migration from colder, more expensive Northern states.

The region’s population as a group increased 0.8%: Alabama 0.2%, Tennessee 0.8%, Florida, 1.1%, Georgia 1.0% and so on.
