Proposed bills are always amusing

Ah, a New Year — which I traditionally usher in with a leisurely perusal of bills filed in the Mississippi Legislature.

Unlike our Jackson lawmakers and the legion of lobbyists looking to influence them, I don’t really concern myself with the likelihood of the proposals ever becoming law or the policy implications they present.

Auto insurance statistics

Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger recently that an estimated 25 percent to 30 percent of our state’s drivers are uninsured.

I have another interesting statistic: 100 percent of the drivers who run into my family’s cars do not have insurance.

Open meetings are important

Government boards throughout this state routinely close meetings simply because they don’t want scrutiny from newspapers.

Usually officials don’t come out and say that, but one recently let it slip — and is now facing a $250 fine as a result.
