Editorial: Prison bribery trial might be good for state

Cecil McCrory, an alleged co-conspirator in the bribery scandal that brought down former Mississippi Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps, has asked to withdraw his guilty plea.

If McCrory wants a trial instead, U.S. District Judge Henry T. Wingate should give it to him.

Scam artists keep lines busy

Every so often I get a call, usually from an elderly female reader, upset about the latest telephone scam to cross her path.

The caller often suggests that we do a story about it to warn others so they don’t get bamboozled into giving away personal information or sending money to the scam artists.

Hawaii’s got nothing on us

When I came to work as a cub reporter at the Greenwood Commonwealth in 1982, my starting salary was $200 per week.

That doesn’t sound like much today, but it was enough to live on. Converted to today’s dollars, it would come to a little under $500 per week.
