Burton wins Magnolia runoff

Political newcomer Sharon Burton won Tuesday’s runoff for the Ward 2 alderman’s race in Magnolia, defeating the Rev. Milton Patterson.

Burton defeated Patterson by a margin of 56 (62 percent) to 29 (32 percent), according to unofficial and uncertified ballot results.

SMCC tuition, payroll rising

Southwest Mississippi Community College trustees voted Tuesday night to raise tuition rates for the 2013-14 academic year and increase employees’ pay to offset the expiration of a payroll tax break.

The move follows three other state community colleges’ recent decisions to raise tuition.
