The Mississippi port fiasco

The misguided effort to expand the port of Gulfport is about to come crashing to a halt and could cost Mississippi hundreds of millions.

After Katrina, former Gov. Haley Barbour diverted $600 million in disaster aid money to expand the port. The money otherwise would have gone to repair houses destroyed by the storm.

Summer delights in Mississippi

I have Bubbie Windham, a security guard at River Hills, to thank for this. Bubbie greets me warmly every time I show up in the parking lot, rushing to make it to a tennis match.

Quarter century of column writing

I just turned 56, so it’s that time of year for a bit of reflection. I’ve been thinking about 25 years of column writing. That’s a quarter of a century. A long time.

One thousand three hundred columns. At a thousand words a column, that’s 1.3 million words. That’s 10 long novels. I hope the words haven’t been wasted.
