Summit Mayor Percy Robinson broke a tie vote Tuesday to demand the resignation of a police lieutenant.
In a 12-minute executive session councilmen Julius Nash and Chris Daniels voted to ask for Kevin Kirk’s resignation, while councilman Lewis and Pittman opposed.
“We have a personnel issue with officer Kevin Kirk,” Robinson said after the vote. “The board has voted in a 2-2 tie to have him resign his position. I had to break the tie. He is to resign his position.”
Officials did not disclose a reason for Kirk’s dismissal.
Earlier in the meeting, the council agreed to reimburse Kirk $40 for a doctor's visit for a drug screening, which Police Chief Kenny Cotton said last week was done at the request of a town council member.
Board appointments approved
In another matter, the council reappointed two people to their current positions on the planning commission and housing authority boards in split votes and appointed a new housing authority commissioner.
The council voted 3-1 to reappoint Stan McMorris to the housing authority board, with Lewis, Pittman and Daniels in favor and Nash opposed. The council voted 4-0 to appoint Adrian Swanigan to the housing authority board, which now has four members instead of three. The others are Ray Smith and Janice Isaac Gooden.
The council also voted 3-1, with Nash opposing, to reappoint Dr. Tom Carey to the planning commission.
