A new convenience store and a medical marijuana dispensary are getting ready to open soon in Summit, the building inspector told town councilman Tuesday.
Gerald Alexander said Pigott Oil’s Market Max store on Highway 51 is taking shape despite missing the company’s goal of opening at the first of the year.
“They brought in a bunch of manpower. It didn’t work — people stumbling all over each other,” he said. “They’re stocking everything right now. They’ve got a little bit of electrical to go. The biggest of the work is done. They’re down to a lot of little small things right now.”
Alexander said the store should be open “within the next two weeks,” adding that supply chain issues have affected the company.
“The biggest thing that they have is getting the equipment that they need,” he said.
Meanwhile, across the street, work is continuing at the Delta Farmacy medical marijuana dispensary on the corner of Highway 51 and Sid Nash Road.
“They’re about 90% complete,” Alexander said. “They’ve still got a lot of security on the outside that they’ve got to do. It’s a state-of-the art facility and, of course, security, they have left no stone unturned.”
The town’s new medical marijuana ordinance is being published in the form of a legal notice for 30 days, in one of the procedural final steps before sales can take place.
Councilman Chris Daniels said he was happy to see new businesses opening up in town, but still discouraged at the amount of dilapidated properties. Councilmen mentioned the former Mid-City Paint shop on Highway 51, not near either of the two new businesses, as an eyesore that has been allowed to remain in an inexcusable state for years.
“I’m pleased to see all of the buildings coming in. I’m ecstatic about that, but as a board we need to be looking at some of these dilapidated places,” Daniels said, adding that the council should revise its demolition list in the first quarter of the year.
In another matter, Town Superintendent Tim Baylor said Summit managed to avoid any major water issues during a recent hard freeze.
“This past month we had some pretty bad weather and we were blessed not to have many water leaks,” he said. “It got real cold, but we were lucky that we didn’t have any big damages.
