There was no slowing down Walthall during the Dixie Youth Baseball 8-year-old South Sub-District 6 Tournament Tuesday at Danny Nichols Field.
Walthall won all four tournament games, including Tuesday’s 17-6 win over McComb American to take the sub-district championship. Walthall advanced to play the North sub-district champion. Both of those teams advance to the state tournament, which begins July 12 in Pascagoula.
Walthall pounded out 19 hits, including a 4-for-4 effort by lead-off hitter Jekovian Holmes. Josh Sanford and Brycelan Magee both had two hits.
Walthall just didn’t do it with the bats. It seemed every ball American hit to the outfield was gobbled up by Taylor Robb, Tony Downs, Tyler Brumfield or Holmes.
“You saw that defense. It was about as good as it gets,” Walthall coach Chad Smith said. “Our outfield is solid.”
Walthall scored six runs on four hits and four errors in the first. American answered with two in the bottom of the inning.
Walthall led 9-5 after three. Walthall added five runs on six hits in the fourth to lead 14-6 after four.
Kylin Robertson, Mason Smith, Raydon Conerly and Robb all had two hits. Rashad Wilson had one.
Casey Redahen, Jacob Gazzo, Tyler Wooley, Max Stewart and Kadarious Powell all had one hit for American. Gazzo’s hit was a run-scoring double.
“We couldn’t get a complete game together and lost to a better team,” American coach Jake Gazzo said. “We’re proud of our boys.”
