Southwest Mississippi Community College freshman forward Jaime Delor has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association Division 1 men’s soccer Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 19 to 24. On Tuesday, he received the same honor from the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges.
In the Bears’ three games during the week, all wins, Delor, who is from Buenos Aires, Argentina, took 16 shots and had 11 shots on goal. He scored 7 goals, had one assist and totaled 15 points. He also scored what proved to be the game-winner in all three games.
With six games remaining in the Bears’ regular season, Delor has already tied or broken four team scoring records.
“My job is to score goals,” he said. “If it helps the team win, all the better. Our defense has to keep the balls out of our own net and I have to put them in.”
“(Scoring) is much easier with the teammates I have around me. Michael (Escobar), Francisco (Alisiardi), Morris (Aitken), all of them, give me great balls.”
After Delor arrived on campus his first day, he said SMCC head coach Zach Mills gave him a paper that said “score.”
“I was so excited to hear about Jaime receiving this award,” Mills said. “He keeps doing what I brought him here to do and I’m glad he’s receiving the recognition he deserves.
“(The award) says a lot about our program here at Southwest and says a lot about the whole state. We have great talent here and I’m glad Jaime and his teammates are (helping show that). I know he will keep working hard to break his own records and the guys are all rallying behind him to see just how far we can go as a family.”
This marks the second straight year a member of the Bears received the NJCAA and MACJC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Aitken was so honored in 2015 after becoming the first member of the team to score four goals in a game.
