The Southwest Bears picked up 5-2 and 10-7 wins at Coahoma Community College on Friday in Clarksdale to complete a four-game sweep of the Tigers. With the wins, the Bears moved to 9-3 on the campaign.
They will host St. Charles Community College, of Missouri, in a 2 p.m. Monday doubleheader in their final tune up before division play.
In the opener, the Bears took a 3-0 lead with a solo run in the top of the second inning and two in the third. They added the final two of the day in the sixth. Coahoma recorded both of its runs in the fourth inning.
Freshman pitcher Trey Setzer (3-0) turned in another fine performance for Southwest, giving up only one hit in four innings, to remain perfect on the year. He had one strikeout.
Tyler Parvin struck out two batters in two innings before giving way to Zach Rowell, who picked up his first save. Sophomore Cody Dillard went 2-for-3, with two singles and two runs batted in, to pace the Bears' seven-hit attack. Chance Schmidt added a single and RBI while Wes Gill, German Hays, Philip Ingraffia and Kyle Wheeler also hit safely.
The Bears scored three runs in the first inning and added one in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth in taking game two. Coahoma scored runs in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings.
Ryan Hickman (3-0) struck out two batters and walked one in four innings on the mound to claim the victory for Southwest. Brandon Foster took over for the fifth and sixth innings before Rowell came on in the seventh to pick up his second save of the day.
First baseman Luke Gipson led Southwest at the plate with two singles and an RBI. Darron McKigney had a two-RBI double while Josh Bouldin also doubled and drove in a run. Wheeler added an RBI single while Jared Fiorito and Johnny McKenzie also singled.
