The Southwest Mississippi Community College Lady Bears split a non-division softball doubleheader Friday with visiting Holmes Community College by winning Game 2 7-4. The visitors prevailed 5-0 in the opener.
With the split, Southwest stands at 11-15 on the season. The Lady Bears resume division play Tuesday when they host Hinds in a 3:00 twinbill.
In the win, Southwest took a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Hali Sasser doubled and later scored on an error. First baseman Lindsay Clark had a two-RBI single, stole second and also scored on an error.
The Lady Bulldogs made the score 4-2 in the fourth inning when Symone Simpson blasted a two-run home run to left center field.
Southwest added three more in the bottom of the sixth. Tipheri Grimes led off with a double and later scored on a fielder’s choice. Also in the inning, Alaina Locke reached home on Sasser’s sacrifice fly and Bethany Wall singled home Aseye Attipoe, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.
Holmes made a comeback attempt in the top of the seventh when L’Shanna Evans smashed a two-out, two RBI double. But pitcher Ashlyn Grisaffe struck out the next batter to end the threat and the game.
Grisaffe went the distance to pick up the win for the Lady Bears. She recorded four strikeouts and walked one batter while allowing eight hits. Clark added a second single in the game while Attipoe and Erin Stuckey also hit safely.
Whitney Moore was the losing pitcher despite striking out 10 batters for Southwest. She issued one walk and surrendered nine hits.
