Gage Pausey pitched three innings of relief and Tanner Parvin broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run single to highlight a four-run fifth inning as the Southwest Mississippi All-Stars got past Tri County, Texas, 8-7, in an elimination game in the third round of the 14-year-olds Babe Ruth Baseball Southwest Regional Tournament on Saturday in Bryant, Ark.
Blake Terrell added a two-run double as part of the fifth inning that gave Southwest the lead for good.
Tri County made it interesting with a three-run sixth, but Randy Bell got the final four outs for the save.
Southwest scored four runs in the first inning, only to see Tri County tie it with a four-run bottom of the fourth.
“We played a lot better defensively and we got some hits to fall,” Southwest manager Will Terrell said. “The guys played a little more loose and enjoyed it more than our first game.”
Earlier in the day, the All-Stars were sent to the losers’ bracket in a 10-0 loss to Nederland, Texas.
Nederland broke open a 3-0 game with a 6-run fourth inning to extend its lead to 9-0, then added another run in the bottom of the fifth.
Southwest was limited to six hits in the loss. Pausey had a single and double, and Marquis added a pair of singles in the losing effort. Bobby Stutzman and Dante Bradberry each had a single for Southwest , which will play today at 5 p.m. against the loser of today’s noon game between Little Rock, Ark., and White Hall, Texas.
