South Pike entered Friday’s game against Amite County looking to rebound after suffering a Week 3 loss against Brookhaven. They did so and in a big way, rolling past the Trojans 62-0.
Entering the game South Pike coach Brinson Wall was worried that coming off of a loss and having the weather play a factor in their practice and preparation could result in a lack-luster performance against a team they beat 41-6 last year. “We came out and played hard from the start,” Wall said. “Even with a short week there was no hangover from the loss. We were focused and did what we needed to do.”
South Pike dominated both ends, as the defense shut out the Trojans' offense all night only allowing only four first downs, all of which came in the second half against the second string. Junior Linebacker, Marquell Brumfield led the way with six solo tackles, four for a loss. He already has 23 solo tackles on the season. Willie Taylor finished with five solo tackles, two of which were for a loss.
Eagles quarterback, Dontavious Turner, went 7-of-8 for 159 yards and two touchdowns to go along with two carries for 48 yards and a score. Their do-it-all back Deldrionn Amos had three receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown. Also finding the end zone for the Eagles were Kardarius “Zoom” Jackson and Brandon Johnson who each had two touchdowns and Cameron Reynolds and Demarcus Ellzey who each had one.
Even though the non-district game has always played in South Pike's favor over the past few seasons, Amite County coaches have used it as an indicator to how much heart a 2A program can have against a larger 4A program that houses many close relatives as sort of a cross-town rival. “We're as big, if not bigger, than anyone we line up with,” said Amite County head coach Reginald Lumpkin.
Both teams return to action Friday as the Trojans go to Port Gibson next Friday night, while the Eagles host the Tylertown Chiefs.
