Anyone who has visited the Southwest Mississippi Community College football fieldhouse recently has noticed numerous changes and improvements, all designed to help the program in its quest to move forward.
Thursday night, an appreciation dinner was in the fieldhouse for those who have donated funds and equipment in the effort.
Southwest president Dr. Steve Bishop, Director of Athletics Dr. Bill Ashley and head football coach Tucker Peavey all expressed their gratitude to each individual who made donations. Peavey said the improvements in facilities will be a huge help in recruiting players.
He also said they will help coaches in teaching the current players.
Also on hand were Reece Nunnery and Neal Randall, hosts of WAKH Radio’s weekly sports talk show, “Chasing Foul Balls.”
Nunnery and Randall were among those who helped spearhead the fund-raising effort.
They said they hoped the assistance the school has received will lead to formation of a booster club that will benefit all of the SMCC athletic programs.
The meal was served in the team’s refurbished locker room allowing there to see first-hand the new lockers, carpet, television and furniture. Attendees also checked out new weight room equipment and toured the new press box.
Televisions also have been installed in the team and coaches’ meeting areas.
Also, the current athletic training room is being converted into office space for coaches, while the former baseball locker room is being renovated to house what will be a larger training room.
Donors to the football include, James Anders, J.W. Beck, Mike Bridwell, James Brumfield, Sammy Clark, Thomas Evans, Robbie Hamilton, Krandall Howell, Reggie Jones, Linda Kuykendall, Chad Lindsey, Jimmy Lowery, Jerry Malone, Ricky Newman, Reece Nunnery, Larry Pray, Donald Price, Ralph Price, Neal Randall, Ron Rushing and James Wicker.
