Three more prospects from the area will sign Division 1 football scholarships Wednesday during National Signing Day just a year after Pike County and surrounding areas saw five ink their National Letters of Intent.
Bogue Chitto’s Brandon Wells and Tylertown’s Tyre’oune Holmes will both sign Wednesday morning with Mississippi State, while Salem’s Jonathan Wilson will sign with Southern Miss.
Last year, Deonte Evans (McComb) and A.J. Jefferson (North Pike) landed at Mississippi State, Vernon Butler and Tra’vez Taylor (North Pike) signed with Louisiana Tech and Oliver Bates (Tylertown) inked with Southern Miss, marking the first time in several decades the area sent that many players to D-1 schools.
In addition to Wednesday’s three signees, several others are expected to sign with junior colleges.
McComb has a 9 a.m. signing day event Wednesday and will send at least a half dozen players to JUCO schools. Among those players are standouts Quatavious Smith, Kevonte Dillon and Derrell Vanderson, who helped McComb to a 8-3 record and its second straight playoff berth this past season.
North Pike, Parklane, South Pike, Bouge Chitto and Tylertown will also recognize its signees throughout the morning.
Thirteen additional players from McComb, North Pike, South Pike, Tylertown and Franklin County signed scholarships in 2012.
