The Southwest Mississippi Roadrunners, led by Charlie Floyd and assisted by Victor Montgomery, Kristie Robinson, and Myreon Sartin, returned home from Lawrence, Kan., with five new All-Americans.
In the 15-16 boys 200-meter dash prelim, Tylertown’s JaRule “Tank” Melvin ran 21.2 to set a new personal record.
Melvin set another personal record in the 15-16 boys 100-meter preliminary clocking in at 10.7 seconds, but he was disqualified from the semifinals because of a false start.
Melvin, however, pulled off a third-place finish in the 200 final with a time of 21.4 seconds.
Battling sickness, Chance Graves managed to finish 21st out of 50-plus athletes within his age group.
Kendrick Matthews set a new season record and personal record in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:56.
Marshelle James was unable to make it passed the 17-18 women 200 preliminary with a time of 25.44. McComb High School’s Shayla Felder ran 56.68 finishing 11th and just missing the 17-18 women’s 400-meter final.
The 17-18 women’s 400-meter relay team composed of James, Felder, Jasmine Peoples and Maresha Chandler ran 46.54, scored a new personal record, and qualified for the finals where they finished eighth due to two bad exchanges.
The 1,600-meter relay team composed of James, Felder, Peoples and Bethany Sanders pushed the limit to score a personal record in the preliminaries with a time of 3:50 to qualify for the finals where they finished seventh.
Looking ahead to next year, the Roadrunners will host two registration camps and a sprint camp with dates to be announced at a later date.
Also, the Roadrunners will be hosting a 5K run in October.
