TYLERTOWN — The 11-0 Tylertown Chiefs made Friday night’s home playoff game against the Jefferson County Tigers look like business as usual, as they defeated the Tigers 46-6 to continue their undefeated run.
While the Chiefs are known for their potent Wing-T offense, their Oregon-style grey jerseys alluded to the high-tempo pistol spread offense on display as well Friday night.
The game began with both teams stopping the offense and turnover on downs.
“We came out a little flat,” said Tylertown head coach Osborne Holmes Jr. said. “We were not on our keys.”
But then Keyun Jefferson made a 20-yard gain with his fluid, shifty moves in the open field.
Wide receiver, Terran Posey caught a 35-yard passing touchdown to make it 7-0 with 6:01 left in the first quarter.
Quarterback Dabryan Magee ended the night with four touchdowns.
Tylertown’s 6-foot-5 wide receiver Johnnie Wilson caught a jump ball with 0:32 left in the first quarter to make it 13-0.
The Tigers’ senior quarterback Rahkendrick Reynolds showed promise when he got in the open field, but there was not enough block to stop offensive linebacker Fred Tillman and the rest of the Chiefs’ defense, which laid on some solid licks.
The Tigers’ lone touchdown came when the Chiefs fumbled the ball and thought the play was blown dead. Instead, Tiger defensive end Keshawn Brinkley picked it up and walked untouched 26 yards to make the score 13-6 with 4:55 left in the second quarter.
Tight end Kedarrious Magee had several key grabs for first downs, carrying multiple defenders. Ty James had several highlight film plays, including a 6-yard scamper for a rushing touchdown, which made it 21-6 after Johnnie Wilson’s jump ball two-point conversion with 2:49 to go in the second quarter.
The second half opened with more of the same, as running back Chardarrious Bridges rushed for 78 yards for a touchdown to make it 27-6 with 6:47 left in the third quarter.
Then a scary moment for the Chiefs happened after a Dabryan Magee first down and 35-yard gain. Keyun Jefferson was hit low on what seemed to be a dirty play. As he jumped for the ball, the defender targeted his ankle. Jefferson is questionable for next week’s game and the Chiefs are making provisions.
Magee took a keeper in for a touchdown from 12 yards out to make it 33-6 with 11:50 left in the game.
Next, the ball hog sophomore free safety Jashon Baker grabbed an interception and took it 55 yards for a touchdown to make it 39-6 with 10:02 to go.
The Chiefs capped it off with a final highlight end round rush by Ty James for a 47-yard touchdown at 6:12 in the fourth to make the final score 46-6.
“We can always get better,” coach Holmes assured. “We will use this game to prepare to be more disciplined. I like our enthusiasm, but we can’t afford future mistakes.”
Tylertown received four unsportsmanlike penalties for celebrating after touchdowns and stops on defense, as well as one targeting penalty.
The Chiefs face Raleigh at home next week.
“Raleigh is explosive on offense,” Holmes said.
There’s little doubt O.J. Magee, who finished with three quarterback sacks, will be used heavily in the defensive scheme next week.
