LUMBERTON — The Lumberton Panthers defeated the Bogue Chitto Bobcats 47-7 in region 4-1A action Friday night.
The Bobcats came into the ballgame winless and coming off of a bye week. The Panthers entered it 5-2 and 2-0 in district play.
The Bobcats were outmatched, as the Panthers receivers towered over Bogue Chitto defenders.
Lumberton had several big catches down the field that set up most of its scoring drives.
The Panthers scored 24 points in the first quarter alone, with two of the three touchdowns coming on the ground.
The Panthers scored another 16 points in the second quarter, one of which came from an interception.
Lumberton added another 7 points in the third quarter.
Bogue Chitto didn’t get on the board until late in the fourth quarter.
“It was evident tonight that we had a young team,” Bogue Chitto head coach Gareth Sartin. “Every week we are building to get better. We will go back to work this week to prepare for Friday,”
The Bobcats had a decent run in the first quarter with a kick return to set up the offensive, but the Panthers’ defense stood its ground and forced the Bobcats to punt.
The Panthers had a big reception down field to set up their first score.
The Panthers’ game plan for the second half was to finish strong, and that is just what they did.
But Bogue Chitto didn’t let Lumberton walk away with it.
The Bobcats had a great fourth-quarter drive, converting a fourth-and-long with a fake punt.
Trey Nettles connected with Zach Upkins for a big reception to set the Bobcats up for great field position, and Bryce Langley made an acrobatic catch in the endzone to give Bogue Chitto its one and only score.
Darius Porter led the bobcats with 13 tackles, while Terrance Morgan and Trey Nettles had five each, Tanner Gunther and Demarcus Godbolt had four, and Henry Thomas, LaFredrick Dillon and Warrick Cook had three.
