McComb head baseball coach Brian Eby predicted Tuesday night’s game against West Jones would be for the district title in two years.
As for Tuesday night, however, the Tigers were playing for pride.
The visiting Mustangs pounded three home runs in the first two innings and went on to beat McComb 20-2 in five innings Tuesday night at Rotary Field. The Tigers have lost all three meetings with West Jones this season, outscored by a combined 52-5.
West Jones took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run by Matthew Farrar and a three-run shot by Tyler Roney.
The Tigers scored their only runs of the game in the bottom of the first. Marquell Carroll reached on a dropped third strike and advanced to second on Kecarderious Wells’ bunt single down the third-base line. A walk to Adrian Brown loaded the bases.
One out later, Walter Jordan was hit by a pitch to bring home Carroll, and Wells scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-2.
But Jordan Koechner’s three-run home run to left-center field capped West Jones’ four-run second inning as the Mustangs upped their lead to 8-2.
The Mustangs added a pair of runs in the third on a single, a McComb fielding error, a second single in the inning and a sacrifice fly to make it 10-2. West Jones added 10 more runs over the final two innings to end the game via the 10-run mercy rule.
McComb will be in action again Thursday against Amite County.
