McComb junior quarterback Alex Woodall received his first major Division I scholarship offer Thursday afternoon from Louisiana Tech.
McComb football coach Malcolm Jones confirmed Louisiana Tech representatives offered via telephone after seeing what they liked on Woodall’s highlight tape.
“They looked at his highlight film and the kid jumped off the screen on them,” Jones said. “They loved his arm strength. They loved the way he threw the ball and the way he was agile and mobile.”
Woodall, who threw for 1,721 yards and 20 touchdowns this past fall, had previously received an offer from Southern University, a Football Championship Subdivision school in Baton Rouge. Woodall is hopeful Louisiana Tech is the first of many from major programs.
“It’s good to have my first Division I offer,” he said. “It gives me a good feeling that next year if I keep working hard there will be more to come.”
Woodall said he doesn’t know much about Louisiana Tech but is interested in learning about the program. The Bulldogs just hired Skip Holtz as their new head coach after former coach Sonny Dykes accepted the same position at California.
“He’s definitely going to work for more (offers) to come in, but it’s always good to have several options to choose from and choose the best fit,” Jones said.
Woodall has attracted interest from several other schools and will attend Alabama’s Junior Day on Saturday. He was in Baton Rouge last weekend for LSU’s Junior Day.
Woodall said he was one of 10 to 15 quarterbacks at the invite-only camp, which featured newly-hired offensive coordinator and former Baltimore Ravens assistant coach Cam Cameron.
Woodall has also been invited to the 2013 Rivals.com Camp Series on April 6 in Birmingham, Ala.
