The McComb 11-year-old National League All-Stars fell short of a state championship title on Monday with a second loss to the Laurel-Jones County American League All-Stars.
After a come-from-behind win over Mendenhall on Saturday afternoon, the McComb NL team, coached by Ray Henderson, took its first loss from Laurel-Jones County, 10-9, on Sunday afternoon.
Despite “PooMan” Felder’s two-run home run along with Cade Rush’s two hits and Josh Henderson’s three, the team left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The team rallied to rout Columbia 11-4 Sunday afternoon, and the McComb NL team took the field once more against Laurel-Jones County on Monday.
Despite their best efforts, the team came up short with only four hits for the game in a 12-2 loss in four innings.
Henderson said he is proud of his team for taking on a bunch that came in second in the Dixie Youth World Series last year as 10-year-olds, but in the end, “the guys just ran out of gas.”
“The guys played great,” Henderson said. “The team does the little things that turn into big things. They sacrifice bats to advance runners to help the team.”
The McComb NL team will go to Region III Championship July 25-27 in Longview, Texas.
