McComb head football coach Randy Martin still holds that title after a day of hedging by school officials following a Wednesday night radio report that said he was relieved of his coaching duties.
McComb schools superintendent Therese Palmertree said Thursday afternoon that rumors of Martin’s dismissal as coach are false.
“Randy Martin has not been dismissed, nor has he been relieved from his coaching duties,” she said. “He is still employed with the McComb School District as head football coach, with teaching responsibilities. There has been no change in his assignment at all, nor in his responsibilities.”
By one account, Martin was in his classroom at Denman Junior High School administering a test on Wednesday when he got a call to report to the school district’s central office, where he met with Palmertree and deputy superintendent LeVander German.
In the meeting, the school officials reportedly told Martin they wanted him to give up his coaching duties but keep his classroom schedule. Martin instead told them he would resign both jobs.
Martin reportedly told a number of friends this week that he would be leaving the school district.
Martin did not comment about the situation Thursday.
Even if the move had been announced, the school board would still have to approve the change in his employment at its next meeting, scheduled for June 10.
