McComb head football coach Randy Martin tendered his resignation Monday, and the McComb School Board accepted it at Tuesday night’s board meeting.
Martin will teach the rest of the school year. The coach told school district officials he’s pursuing other career options as the reason for his departure.
“It was kind of the way things were going,” Martin said Tuesday night. “I’m looking. I have no plans, and I haven’t seen a contract and have no offer on the table.”
Martin took over for the Tigers after McComb went 1-9 in 2004. In his four seasons, Martin was 24-20, including a 2-3 record in the playoffs.
In his first season, the Tigers went 5-6, including a playoff win over Long Beach. In his second season, McComb went 9-3 before losing in the second round of the playoffs. In 2007, McComb finished 7-4 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.
This past season, the young Tigers were 3-7. Three district losses came in the final minutes, and the Tigers missed the playoffs by a game.
“It’s been good,” Martin said of his time at McComb. “I have no desire to leave the area but the way the situation is, it’s time to move on, at least from that position.”
McComb will now find a head coach to take over a team that returns most every skill position player on offense and defense. Martin said he didn’t know what would happen to his assistants or of any candidates in the running to replace him.
As for his job search, he’s got his ear to the ground.
“I would like to stay around here, but you have got to go where the job is,” Martin said. “I’m just looking and seeing what’s out there.”
