The Southwest softball team had a difficult time Friday and Saturday at the LSU-Eunice tournament as its lone win in four games was a 10-5 victory over Trinity Valley Community College Saturday morning.
Southwest and Trinity Valley traded leads and were tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Tipheri Grimes had two singles and a run batted in, as the Lady Bears (5-5) batted around in the bottom of the sixth and scored five runs to take the lead for good at 9-4.
Bethany Wall, Hali Sasser and Brooke Szigeti also had RBI singles, while Shelbi Conerly walked to drive in another run.
Lindsay Clark had solo homers in the game as well as two singles for the Lady Bears. In addition to her two singles, Grimes also doubled. Whitney Moore doubled and Wall added another single.
Moore (4-1) pitched six innings to pick up the win for Southwest. She allowed three hits while striking out six and walking one. Ashlyn Grisaffe tossed the final inning.
Also on Saturday, the Lady Bears’ gave up three runs in the sixth inning en route to a 5-0 loss to host LSU-Eunice. Grisaffe took the loss to fall to 1-4.
In Friday’s action, Southwest gave up three runs in the first and second innings in a 9-1 loss to Northwest Florida. The Lady Bears’ lone run, and hit, came on a solo homer by Clark. Southwest had only two hits, singles by Grimes and Kolbi Lewis, in an 8-0 loss to LSU-E.
Southwest will return to the diamond Wednesday with a road series at Holmes Community College. The first pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 3 p.m.
