The Kentwood Kangaroos will be making a familiar road trip to West St. John on Friday.
It isn’t familiar for the players, but the coaches have been to Edgard, La., plenty.
The ’Roos and Rams faced each in the state playoffs for three straight years in the mid-90s.
Both teams had double-digit wins last week, and both will be looking to advance to the 1A state semifinals.
“We’re happy to still be playing,” Kentwood head coach Dave Currier said.
Not that the ’Roos were tested in last Friday’s game, but the offense played efficiently and the defense was able to play well — even though it was on the field for the majority of the game.
The Rams should be a much tougher team than Kentwood faced against Haynesville last week.
West St. John started the season 0-5, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
The Rams played up, facing two 2A and 3A teams and 4A Franklinton.
After that opening gauntlet, West St. John ran through its district schedule.
The Rams have won their last six games by at least 16 points.
A big part of the Ram offense are running backs Kenneth Dabney and Romell Howard.
Dabney and Howard combined to score four touchdowns for West St. John in its win over Hamilton Christian last Friday.
The two combined for 180 yards in the win, while the team ran the ball for 239 yards the week before.
With the running game the Rams have, Kentwood’s win over Haynesville should be a good sign as the ’Roos defense kept the Golden Tornadoes from putting together any drives in the first half, while the offense jumped out to a 34-0 lead.
