Tylertown’s Tyre’oune Holmes and Bogue Chitto’s Brandon Wells will play in the 26th-annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game Saturday in Montgomery, Ala.
Holmes and Wells were the only local players selected to the team, which is chock full of Division I athletes. Both players have committed to Mississippi State and are expected to sign with the Bulldogs in February.
Former McComb standout Deonte Evans and former North Pike star A.J. Jefferson both played in the game in 2011.
Holmes wrapped up another impressive campaign in 2012 and helped Tylertown capture a 10-2 record en route to a district championship. The quarterback ran for 1,260 yards and 20 touchdowns and threw for another 719 yards and seven touchdowns.
The speedy Holmes has played cornerback this week during practice in Montgomery and will likely be a defensive back and special teams contributor for Mississippi State. Holmes’ cousin, Jameon Lewis, is a wide receiver and kick returner for the Bulldogs. Lewis helped lead Tylertown to the 2009 3A state title.
Wells played mostly running back for Bogue Chitto and racked up 1,333 yards and 10 TDs. He is likely to play defense for Mississippi State with his 6-foot-2-inch, 180-pound frame.
