The South Pike High School football team had 413 rushing yards and 627 all-purpose yards in the season-opener at Jefferson County Friday and went on to an easy 47-20 victory.
Eagles head coach Michael Andrews was glad to see his team starting out the season on a positive note.
“Our offense seemed to move the ball well up the field, and we were able to make key stops on defense also,” Andrews said.
The team was able to complete many big plays throughout the night, but one that stood out to the head coach among many was a kickoff returned for a 90-yard touchdown by South Pike’s John Jones.
“Our personnel really hasn’t changed much since last season,” Andrews said. “We’re looking forward to getting better each week as a team.”
Jaxavian Holmes led the Eagles with 101 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Corey Pittman had 17 tackles and two sacks, while Jones had six tackles for South Pike.
South Pike will host Tylertown at 7 p.m. Friday.
“We plan on watching film to prepare for next week, it’ll be a tough ball game, but we’re very fortunate it to have it at our home field,” Andrews said.
