The Southwest Ole miss Community College baseball team dropped a pair of MACJC South Division home games to Copiah-Lincoln Community College on Sunday afternoon, falling 7-4 and 10-6. The games marked the first round of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge.
Southwest took a 4-0 lead after two innings in Game 1, but allowed seven straight runs to suffer the loss.
In the first inning, Frank Rodriguez blasted a two-out, bases-loaded double to right field for a 3-0 lead. The Bears picked up their next run in the second inning when Austin lined a double to right center to send Logan Ferrell to the plate.
Co-Lin took advantage of five hits and two Southwest errors to tie at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning. The Wolves then added one more in the fifth before scoring their final two runs in the top of the seventh.
Dylan Gregoire went 61/3 innings on the mound to take the loss for Southwest (9-17, 0-6). He surrendered six hits and six runs (five earned), while striking out seven and walking two.
Austin had a single in the game to go along with his double to lead SMCC.
In Game 2, Co-Lin (15-10, 5-3) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning using two hits, a walk, a hit batsmen and two Southwest errors.
The Bears tied the game at 3-3 with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first. Collin Carroll singled and came around to score when Kade Scivicque reached base on an error. Two batters later, with courtesy runner Marvin Van Buren and Kendric Hodges on base, Rodriguez singled to send them both to the plate.
The Wolves then scored three of their own with two outs in the top of the second to go up 6-3 with help from three walks and three Southwest errors.
Southwest added a run in the bottom of the frame, to make the score 6-4 when Austin singled and later scored from third base on a wild pitch.
Four hits and a walk allowed Co-Lin to increase their lead to 10-4 in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears added two more runs on an RBI double by Scivicque and Hodges’ RBI single.
Kyle Crifasi gave up nine runs (six earned) on five hits in three innings to take the loss for Southwest. Hodges led the offense two singles in the game while Anthony Durr had also had two.
Southwest returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Perkinston to face Ole miss Gulf Coast at3 p.m.
