Southwest's softball team traveled to Goodman on Saturday to take on the Holmes Lady Bulldogs in a doubleheader, winning both games 3-0 and 5-4.
In Game One, Allie Ladnier started on the mound for the Lady Bears and pitched the entire game.
Through seven innings, Ladnier tallied eight strikeouts with only two hits and no runs allowed.
All three of Southwest’s runs came on an Allie Ladnier three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning.
Ladnier was responsible for all of the Lady Bears' runs while simultaneously shutting out the Bulldogs from the mound.
Game Two was a closer contest that resulted in a come-from-behind 5-4 win for Southwest.
Ballard Kraft started at pitcher in for the Lady Bears. Kraft had three strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.
Mary Claire Salley took over pitching duties for Kraft and had two strikeouts of her own in 1.1 innings pitched.
Corin Talbot finished the game on the mound and picked up the win for Southwest.
Talbot had three strikeouts and only one hit allowed in the final two innings pitched.
After five innings in Game Two, the Lady Bears found themselves down 4-0.
But a huge sixth inning from Southwest would tie the game.
Madalyn Ashford kicked off the inning with a double to get into scoring position.
Bailey McLin singled next to get two runners on base.
A Corin Talbot single scored Ashford for the first run of the game for Southwest.
Down 4-1 with two runners on base, Alexis Dejean hit a three-run home run to center field to tie the game.
Still tied going into the top of the seventh, Kate Clements homered on the first pitch of the inning to give the Lady Bears a 5-4 lead over Holmes.
With two strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh, Corin Talbot would take down three straight batters to clinch the win for Southwest.
Corin Talbot led the team with two hits.
Bailey McLin, Alexis Dejean, Allie Ladnier, Kate Clements, Jana Phillips, and Madalyn Ashford all had a hit each.
Alexis Dejean and Kate Clements each had a home run and accounted for four of the five RBIs for the team.
Corin Talbot (x2) and Bailey McLin stole bases in the contest.
“Anytime you can go on the road in our league and get a sweep, it’s a tremendous accomplishment,” head coach Shea Johnson said. “I’m super proud of my kids and my coaches and the effort everybody is putting in. These kids, they don’t quit.”
“I just can’t say enough about the team and the cohesion and how important that is to the success we’re having. As a coach it really makes you proud to see those girls come together,” Johnson said. “They don’t ever believe they’re whooped. They believe they have a chance, they don’t hang their heads. And for that I commend them. I commend my coaches for doing the job they’re doing and for how hard they work.”
The Lady Bears (19-4, 5-1) will be back at home on Tuesday taking on Jones College.
