SMCC soccer falls at Holmes Tuesday
The Southwest Community College women’s soccer team surrendered two second-half goals to Mara Baker and fell 2-0 to the Holmes Lady Bulldogs in Ridgeland Tuesday afternoon. With the defeat, the Lady Bears fell to 2-9 while Holmes climbed to 5-4.
Southwest keeper Devin Cassett saved 13 of 14 shots on goal.
The Lady Bears play their final non-division match at 2 p.m. Friday when they travel to Decatur to face East Central.
In men’s soccer, the host Holmes Bulldogs took a 1-0 halftime lead and held on for a 3-1 win against the Southwest Bears Tuesday afternoon in Ridgeland. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 1-8-2 on the season while the Bulldogs moved to 5-3-1.
Macaulay Gibson scored for the Bulldogs at 13:00 of the first half to give the home team the halftime lead. Gibson added another goal at 49:00 and Michael Orcutt scored at 72:00 to make the score 3-0.
Southwest avoided the shutout when Irving Aitken played through a ball to Drew McInnis that was bobbled by the Holmes keeper. McInnis finished it to pick up the goal at 83:00.
Southwest keeper Bryant Boyington saved nine of 12 shots on goal, including his third penalty kick save of the season.
The Bears return to action at 4 p.m. Friday when they close out their non-division schedule at East Central in Decatur.
