McComb Selectman Donovan Hill volunteered to use $300 set aside for his travel expenses to sponsor a child at Camp Sunshine in July.
Camp Sunshine, established in 1976, is five days and four nights for a child with any disability. It begins the first Wednesday after July 4. It will be July 6 to 11 this year.
The Junior Auxiliary of McComb, which runs the camp, asked the city to sponsor a child at Camp Sunshine.
When Mayor Quordiniah Lockley noted the sponsorship request at Tuesday’s work session, Hill volunteered to use his travel money.
“I’ll sponsor one using my travel funds,” Hill said.
Selectman Ronnie Brock asked if the board discussed being able to have sponsorship in the past.
Board Attorney Marcus Williams said the city could not make donations, but sponsorships are legally permitted.
Hill suggested giving the child souvenirs from the city.
“Let’s put it in a basket,” he said.
If the sponsorship is approved, it would not be the first time Hill used his travel money for that purpose.
Hill used his travel money last year to sponsor the Ravens youth football team. He said the sponsorships help save young children in the community.
“It was money I was supposed to use for travel, but I never used it,” he said. “Last year, I used my money to give to a youth football league in McComb to help them out. I think this year it’s perfect timing for us to sponsor somebody at Camp Sunshine.”
