South Pike rising senior Micah Nickerson announced his commitment to continue his football career at Mississippi State on Sunday.
The rangy 6-foot-5 edge rusher starred as a two-way player for the Eagles during their nine-win campaign last year, and that caused his recruitment to take off in the spring. Recent months saw Nickerson reel in offers from a handful of FBS programs, primarily within the Sun Belt.
But Nickerson joined a plethora of other high school prospects on a recent visit to Starkville, and it clearly made an impact, as he was one of many commitments from the weekend's festivities.
“They’ve been checking me out and invited me in on a visit. I always wanted to play for Mississippi State and when I got that offer, that’s where I wanted to be. I’m just ready to play for them,” Nickerson said. “Me and my mom had been talking about it this whole summer and I told her I wanted to come here and graduate high school early so I can go ahead and get there. On Saturday I told the coaches I was ready. I rang the bell and told them I was ready to be a Dawg.”
Nickerson is expected to shine for South Pike as a dominant pass-rusher and run-stuffer this season before he joins the Bulldog program in 2026. His unique combination of size and athleticism makes Nickerson a prototypical SEC EDGE, and with added weight and experience, the Eagles' star should have a bright future head of him.
Nickerson is coming off of a dominant junior season in which he had 20.0 tackles for loss and 11.0 sacks.
Under head coach Jeff Lebby, MSU is looking to build a strong foundation for long-term success in the SEC, and Nickerson was a major in-state addition for the coaching staff to secure.
“It was great. I saw a bunch of players I played against like (Sanfrisco Magee) and KaMario Taylor and his little brother (Jaiden Taylor). We always played against good competition like those guys and now we get a chance to play together,” Nickerson said of the visit.
