The South Pike boys and girls powerlifting teams, led by T.J. Varnado, Cortavion Gooden, Tykeia Magee, Samiya Lowery and Maliyah Walker, secured runner-up honors at the 4A State Powerlifting Championships over the weekend at the Jackson Coliseum.
The respective teams also shattered various records, beginning with Varnado breaking the 4A state deadlift record with a 605-pound lift in the 165-pound class.
Gooden earned Super 12 honors in the super heavyweight division with a 700-pound squat, 355-pound bench press and 600-pound deadlift.
Walker also earned a Super 12 spot with a 400-pound squat, 175-pound bench press and 400-pound deadlift in the 242 class.
Tyrone Varando leads the school's vaunted powerlifting program, and this all comes after both the Eagles' teams earned top honors at the 4A South-State meets they hosted earlier this month.
