Parts of McComb were put under a boil-water notice late Wednesday afternoon, hours after city crews discovered problems with the system amid a hard freeze.
The notice is in effect for businesses and residences west of Marion Avenue, including Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, Mayor Quordiniah Lockley said.
"Out of an abundance of caution, Mississippi Department of Health has requested that the City of McComb issue a boil-water notice for all citizens and businesses West of Marion Avenue," the mayor said.
Residents reported reduced water pressure and discoloration in the water on Wednesday morning.
Lockley said city workers inspected the water infrastructure and found that a sensor had malfunctioned, causing pressure to drop in parts of town.
He said it appears parts of the city maintained adequate water pressure to avoid declaring a boil-water notice and the discoloration was likely due to older pipes in homes that needed to be flushed out once water pressure was restored.
