A SECESSION MOVEMENT BEGINS
Will someone please explain how the trailer park on Pine Ridge Road near Johnston Station increased property values? I live in Johnston Station and would like to secede from Pike County. I would join Lincoln County for their better roads and bridges. Check out Dixon Road in Johnston Station.
AND THE TAX ASSESSOR RESPONDS
This is a reply from Laurie Allen to the author of “A secession movement begins” in Wednesday’s My Two Cents. Respectfully, your submission lacks information I need to answer your question regarding Pike County property values, and more specifically, increased values as the result of a trailer park. You may reach me at 601-783-4130 or lauriea@co.pike.ms.us.
TRY THIS NOISE ORDINANCE
I read in the paper where Pike County supervisors are wanting to put more teeth into the county’s noise ordinance for loud music. How about a noise ordinance for these illegal fireworks? They have been banned for 25 or 30 years, and we still have to hear them every holiday. Just good ole boy politics at its best.
A TRAFFIC SAFETY ISSUE
I was driving west on Delaware in front of the post office, about 20 mph. A car was driving east in front of Brentwood when the driver decided to cross the westbound lane to park in the handicap parking space in front of the post office, headed in the wrong direction. I had to slam the brakes to avoid a head-on collision. There are too many cars parking in front of the post office in the wrong direction. The police need to give these folks a ticket.
A FATAL SHOOTING IN SOUTH CAROLINA
There is hardly any news about the student in South Carolina being shot when he went to the wrong house at 2 a.m. There is no information about the homeowner. Is it because the student was white? We heard all about the Black boy who went to the wrong house at 10 p.m. and was shot by an 84-year-old White man, and it was called a hate crime. The South Carolina student was killed; we’ll never know the color of the shooter.
NOW THEY’RE CALLING AT NIGHT
We all are irritated by those flim-flam telephone thieves that call all day long. The ones that the attorney general makes no effort to stop. My phone rang at 3:15 a.m. (the middle of the night). A recorded message said I had won the Publishers Clearing House jackpot, (that I had not entered) and I needed to call a number to claim. I called the number shown on caller ID and it was no longer in service. The phone thieves are now coming in the night.
OIL CONTROLS THE WORLD
You had a great editorial on the gasoline prices. Doesn’t it just go to show us that oil controls the world? We have learned, as we have whenever there is a need, that we will pay the price and complain but continue to buy. Take eggs, for example. The price rose due to issues, and it only came down when consumers quit buying. Oil companies understand this the best.
ABOUT THAT TRAILER FIRE
Regarding Debbie Touchstone’s Aug. 25 letter on the trailer fire, I remember this very well. I was doing A/C work and installed it in their trailer. I turned the unit on, closed the windows and went to the Hattiesburg office. Got a call from gas company rep that the A/C freon leaked and caused fire. Fire marshal knew and I knew freon did not burn. It was a gas leak from the propane stove. When I closed windows, propane built up in trailer, and boom.
NORTH PIKE BUS PROBLEMS
The transportation situation at the North Pike School District is ridiculous. The bus routes are not working. Kids are on the buses for hours. More parents drop off their kids because buses don’t come on time or at all. Someone needs to let the superintendent know that this is not a city school. The way you did it on the Coast does not work for us here.
ABOUT THE FOOTBALL TRIP
Perhaps the discussion should not be about Dr. Ellis on suspension, but rather the coaches being fired. If it was not a school trip, who paid for the transportation, lodging and meals? If school funds or athletic funds were used, it was a school trip. Either way, coaches should have official school permission to take 30 students out of town.
