Robert, or Bob as he was better known, was born June 23, 1931, in McComb. He was the son of the late Rufus Bressie and Madge Simmons Reeves.
Bob was a retired Marine colone, having served more than 30 years in active and reserve status beginning with his much loved 2-56 Basic Class. He also retired as an attorney, having served for more than 30 years. He attended J.J. White Presbyterian Church and earlier he had served as a deacon in the First Baptist Church of Magnolia.
Bob had a full and active life, and he was always and forever a Marine. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in October 1955 and reported to Quantico, Va., in January 1956 for the 13th Officer Candidate Course. His last billet in the U.S. Marine Corps reserves was as staff judge advocate for the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing. He participated also in NATO amphibious landing operations in Germany and Denmark and many other operations with the Marines.
During his attorney years, he was a deputy director for the Public Employees Retirement System of Mississippi, and a Special Assistant Attorney General assigned to PERS. He practiced law for many years in McComb in partnership with his brother, R.B. He was a Pike County prosecuting attorney, an attorney for the South Pike School District and was part of many other legal institutions during the course of his practice.
One of Bob’s proudest memories is during the civil unrest of the 60’s when the KKK became very active in Pike County and were responsible for church bombings and assaults on local citizens. He was serving as the Pike County prosecutor and along with the district attorney, sheriff and local constables stood up against these hate crime and were able to bring them to the “Bar of Justice.”
He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and he will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Judee McElwee Reeves; and a brother, R.B. Reeves.
He is survived by his wife of four happy years, Sue D. Reeves; two sons, Robert Simmons Reeves Jr., and Charles Bressie Reeves (Stacey); two daughters, Julia Reeves Leggett (Tim) and Abba Reeves Mapp (Claude); Mrs. Sue Reeves’ loving family, Jennifer Schroder, James Jones, Reagan Jones, Dennis Jones and Jacqueline Blacker; nine grandchildren, Brandon, Justin, Sarah, Tommy, Clay, Faith, Eevee, Matthew and Kaitlyn; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to J.J. White Presbyterian Church of McComb and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation Gift Processing Administrator, 18251 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, VA 22172.
