A Summit woman is in a coma and fighting for her life after being brutally attacked and left for dead in the Summit Post Office parking lot.
Summit Police Chief James Isaac said Johanna Terell Smith, 45, of Martin Road, was found unconscious around 2 a.m. Saturday.
Isaac said witnesses saw a young black male pull Smith from a small white vehicle with a spoiler on the back, attack her and leave.
He said medical reports show the attacker allegedly stomped on Smith’s head multiple times.
Officers were called to the scene at 2:23 a.m. and arrived at 2:26.
AAA ambulance services transported Smith to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, and she was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she was been placed on life support.
Isaac said Wednesday that police have no suspects.
The Pike County Sheriff’s Department is assisting Summit police with the investigation.
“We will find whoever did this,” Isaac said, “Because this is such a brutal attack, I take it personally on my watch. Once we find whoever did this, they will be charged with aggravated assault with indifference to human life.”
Isaac said Smith suffered extensive injuries.
He said a man witnessed the attack, but he was so far away, he could not positively identify the assailant. The witness told officers he was certain the attacker was a black male, Isaac said.
