Authorities say a Summit man is apparently responsible for the Nov. 6 death of his brother, but no charges have been filed in the case as investigators review claims of self-defense.
Randy McDaniel, 40, 2156 Barnett Road, died of multiple stab wounds to the chest, Pike County Coroner Percy Pittman said.
Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Rushing said officials believe McDaniel’s brother, David McDaniel, 53, 2146 Barnett Road, is responsible for the death, but investigators are looking into self-defense claims.
The brothers, who raised roosters, reportedly were arguing over the value of a rooster when the fight broke out, investigator Lance Falvey said.
He said Randy McDaniel reportedly went to his brother’s house and confronted him with a shotgun, the two ended up fighting. David McDaniel apparently stabbed his brother with a knife. Lawmen found Randy McDaniel’s body in the front yard of his brother’s residence.
David McDaniel also was hurt in the confrontation. He was treated at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center for head and arm injuries, then released.
District Attorney Dee Bates said David McDaniel’s self-defense claim has been a factor in the lack of charges so far. “We are assuming that is a possibility. It’s something the sheriff’s office will be looking into.”
