United Givers of Southwest Mississippi is kicking off its annual fundraising campaign with a cook-off at the end of the month.
The second annual Carport Cook-off is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 28 in the downtown McComb parking garage. The cook-off contains three divisions: chili, chicken (wings and thighs) and jambalaya.
The McComb city board recently approved the sale and consumption of beer at the cook-off. There will also be live music, children’s activities and televisions airing college football games.
There are 15 teams registered for the cook-off. Registration is $75 per team, and the deadline is Sept. 20.
United Givers’ goal for the year is $160,000. Last year, the organization had the same goal and managed to raise 92 percent during the three-month campaign.
“If everyone contributes a little bit, it makes the community a better place,” executive director Molly Johnson said. “Hopefully this year we’ll be able to reach our goal and help everybody who’s in need.”
United Givers raises money for 16 groups in Amite, Pike and Walthall counties, including two new organizations, Excel By 5 and Women In Need of God’s Shelter.
The agencies request funds, and United givers tries to fulfill the needs of each.
Formerly United Way, the organization separated to keep the funds raised in the area.
“All of the money we raise here stays here,” Johnson said. “Every penny of it.”
Last year, United Givers hosted two fundraising events but decided to focus on one big fundraiser this time. Aside from the cook-off, United Givers asks businesses and citizens for donations.
“It’s a good way to help make our community better and stronger,” Johnson said. “You don’t have to give a lot, but if everybody gave a little bit, raising $160,000 wouldn’t be that hard.”
