A thief apparently decided not to steal most of the items taken from two vehicles at the same house on Fernwood Road Monday but still left the victims without their cash or tunes.
Pike County Chief Investigator Chris Bell said Meandia Walker told deputies that she went outside around 6:20 a.m. and found a door to her 2009 Nissan Altima ajar and the glove compartment open. She said someone stole $100 from her wallet, along with some personal items, and threw papers all over the floor and seat.
Meanwhile, Zauda Wells told deputies someone broke into her 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis. They also left the car doors and glove compartment open and stole a CD.
Deputies returned to the home later that day after Walker reported finding some of the items inside the mailbox, but not the $100 in cash or the CD taken from Wells’ vehicle.
In an unrelated case, McComb detectives are investigating the theft of two guns from a vehicle on Prairie Lane.
Detective Deska Varnado said John W. Graves told officers at 2:03 p.m. Monday that someone entered his 2004 Ford F-150 and took a Mossburg 500 .410 pump shotgun and a Henry lever-action rifle.
Varnado said there were no signs of forced entry.
“If you have valuables in your vehicle, please remove them prior to leaving,” Varnado said.
He said it is especially risky to leave items in plain sight.
“People are out and they walk the streets and peep into cars,” he said. “When they see something, they seize the opportunity.”
