After months of work on Summit Street, more work is coming this summer and beyond.
The city board voted unanimously to approve a change order with T.L. Wallace Construction Inc. of Columbia to increase the cost of the project to $570 and add 66 days to its timeline.
Public Works Director Phillip Russell said the added amount is due to a change in how a water line one block south of Georgia Avenue to New York Avenue will be laid, but the increase in time is from unforeseen issues that have occurred throughout the project.
“They have run into numerous sewer and water services that weren’t identified in the original plans, and that took more time,” Russell said, referring to water aand sewer lines that had to be disconnected and reconnected at private homes and businesses. “They’ve run into water main breaks and various things like that have taken more time. I’m very satisfied with the quality of work I’ve seen on Summit Street, but I’m not satisfied with the time.”
Selectman Tommy McKenzie expressed concern that the project was started in September of 2012 and will not be finished until two years later, which could greatly impact McComb’s ability to receive Community Development Block Grants in the future.
The project should be finished by Sept. 5. Russell said new asphalt should be laid on Summit Street this week.
