Parklane Academy Science Olympiad students notched three top-25 finishes in the national competition in Augusta, Ga.
“That is such an accomplishment,” said Kayla O’Hearn, high school coach. “The kids represented our state very well.”
The teams — consisting of 11 junior high and 10 high school students — competed against 60 teams in each division.
In the junior high division, Blass Watson and Dallas McClendon placed 25th in the Scrambler.
In the high school division, Curt Nunnery, Elizabeth Wallace and Sarah DeLee placed 22nd for Picture This, and Lee Anglin and Laura Sumrall finished sixth for their Egg-O-Naut.
The Egg-0-Naut is a pressurized water rocket that is launched and carries a raw egg. Bonus points were awarded if the capsule holding the egg separates the egg doesn’t crack.
This was the first year the junior high group participated and the second for the high school.
The teams qualified for the national contest by winning their divisions at the state competition. They were the only eligible groups from Mississippi.
