One goal of the Scenic Rivers Alliance is to help this area gain more identity, says the executive director.
Joseph Parker, director of recreation for the City of McComb and also executive director of Scenic Rivers, noted that other regions of the state, including the Delta, the Gulf Coast, the Golden Triangle and the Pine Belt, are more familiar in the minds of many than southwest Mississippi.
He told the McComb Rotary Club Wednesday that “Scenic Rivers is about us,” adding later that “we’re trying to gain some identity.”
Scenic Rivers is supported by Pike and Amite counties and the City of McComb. Parker said negotiations are ongoing to bring in other counties in the region.
The Alliance’s purpose is to promote natural resources and other attributes of this area to attract visitors and economic development.
He showed a DVD promoting lakes and streams in the area, as well as hunting opportunities and other recreational venues, including golf.
Parker also discussed McComb’s expanding Sports Park which recently added a third ball playing field and is about to add a fourth.
