McComb Public Works director Philip Russell discussed the cost of paving streets with selectmen this week, in response to questioning at a previous meeting.
He said the cost can vary depending on a range of factors, but in general, a two-lane street that is 22 feet wide costs $200,000-250,000 per mile. As a reference he used the southern end of Parklane Road, which was recently milled and paved with asphalt.
Russell stressed to the board that his estimate included only the cost of milling and asphalt paving, but actual costs could rise because of striping, manholes, water valves, design engineering and unexpected base repairs.
Historic commission applicant addresses board
Karen Vohs, an applicant for the Historic Preservation Commission, introduced herself to the board. By way of qualifications, she said she owns a historic home on South Fourth Street with “extremely large roaches,” one of which recently “was driving a Kia.”
Vohs said she would like to see design guidelines for properties in historic districts applied. She said she maintains her home well, but her next-door neighbor’s house “looks like something the cat drug in three weeks ago and got gnawed on by a dog.”
“If we’re going to have a historic district, then we need to have applications to the parameters that are in place,” she said.
The board will vote on Vohs’ appointment in July.
The regular meeting for July was held today at 8 a.m. instead of next Tuesday because the mayor and board members will be in Biloxi attending a Mississippi Municipal League conference.
