A Summit man died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle wreck Friday night.
Pike County Coroner Percy Pittman pronounced Leroy Alexander, 83, of Summit, dead on the scene about 8 p.m.
Alexander’s 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck was hit head-on by a 2015 Dodge Dart driven by John Smith, 49, Summit, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred just west of the Highway 24/Highway 48 intersection in Pike County.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Cpl. Brandon Fortenberry said Smith was traveling east on Highway 24 when his Dodge crossed the center lane and struck Alexander’s westbound vehicle.
The Dodge ended up in the middle of the roadway and the Chevy came to rest on the north shoulder of Highway 24. The McComb Fire Department responded to the crash and used the Jaws of Life to get to Alexander, Capt. Warren Agnor said.
Smith was taken to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries, Fortenberry said.
He said he couldn’t determine if either Smith or Alexander were wearing seatbelts. There were no immediate signs that either driver had been drinking.
The accident is still under investigation, Fortenberry said.
