TYLERTOWN — Walthall County school board members think Tylertown High School’s parking lot is no paradise.
Superintendent Wade Carney said the pockmarked pavement can be fixed, but “it’s going to cost some money.” He asked for permission to have professional pavers look at the area and to advertise for bids on repaving at least part of the lot and entrance drive.
“That circle is the worst (paving) I’ve seen,” board member Bobbie Lewis said. “I’d like to see that fixed.”
“Depending on the price,” board member Deloris Breland added.
Board President Eldredge Boyd said he would like to lighting added to the area as well. “That parking lot is dark,” he said.
Breland questioned whether the board should pursue the project, however.
“Does this need to be a priority when we’re talking about teacher incentives?” Breland asked.
Carney said the remaining funds from the rebate of an overpayment on district bonds, which was already tapped for school bus purchases, could cover the paving project.
“I kind of had in mind to earmark part of that for this,” Carney said.
District business manager Marcy Hartzog said the district should have between $30,000 and $40,000 of the rebate left, which Carney said should be enough to pay for the paving.
Another project already in progress, renovation of the THS gym, is about 75 percent complete, Carney said.
Plumbing fixtures are ready to be placed in restrooms, he said, and drop ceilings are in place and ready for lighting fixtures and ductwork to be installed. Lobby flooring has been completed.
Materials for the next phase of the renovation, in the team dressing rooms, are on site.
“I’m not sure where we are money-wise, but we are well within the budget” for the project, Carney said.
